PWAM’s Achievements: A Glimpse into Their Impactful Work
During the AGM, PWAM took the opportunity to reflect on their journey since their formation in 2019 and share their remarkable achievements in several key areas:
1. Environmental Initiatives:
PWAM’s dedication to preserving Malindi’s environment has been outstanding. Through 58 collaborative clean-up efforts, the community has been mobilized to maintain a pristine coastal haven. Their focus on opportunities in the Green and Blue Circular economy has raised awareness and fostered sustainability. Notably, empowering the Baharini women’s group to craft waste bags for plastic collection turned a challenge into an opportunity, benefiting both the community and the environment. Collaborations with key environmental players, mangrove planting, and installing bins in the streets also demonstrate PWAM’s commitment.
2. Infrastructure Improvements:
PWAM has played a crucial role in overseeing the implementation of vital infrastructure projects in Malindi. Roads like Kenya Navy to Stan-chart seafront road, Absa to Mtangani Road, and Alaskan to Maimoon Hospital have been diligently monitored, ensuring the highest standards. Concrete drainage covers at the bus station have significantly improved safety and well-being in the town.
3. Community Response to COVID-19:
In response to the pandemic, PWAM took proactive measures, including distributing shopping vouchers to registered beach operators, fumigating the town, and donating masks to the Malindi Sub-County Hospital and the public. These actions not only promoted safety but also built goodwill and a sense of community during challenging times.
4. Tourism Enhancement:
PWAM’s collaboration with stakeholders and the community has transformed Malindi’s tourism landscape. Their efforts to expand the airport and attract more flights, along with partnerships with influencers and hotels, have boosted tourism by increasing the town’s visibility. More flights and increased visits to historic sites indicate the success of their endeavors in making Malindi a sustainable tourism destination.
5. Security Initiatives:
Security is vital for Malindi’s growth, and PWAM has established strong relationships with local authorities and stakeholders to promote security operations. Donations for police patrols, support for officers during elections, and efforts to improve security infrastructure demonstrate PWAM’s commitment to a safer community.
6. Involvement in the Judiciary:
PWAM’s multifaceted engagement in legal matters has seen the organization invited to join the Court Users Committee of the Environment and Land Court (ELC Court), where it represents stakeholders with a vested interest in environmental law. Beyond this pivotal role, PWAM has been invited by the Resident Judge to contribute to discussions on strategies for integrating petty offenders into community work programs, fostering both rehabilitation and community well-being. Additionally, PWAM’s commitment to enhancing access to legal information is evident through the placement of information boards in the corridors of the Malindi High Court, simplifying the understanding of new court rates and furthering its mission to create a more just, sustainable, and informed society in Malindi.
7. Education Initiatives:
Through a partnership with the European Business University, PWAM has registered 1000 students for scholarships on diploma courses, while others have been sponsored for degree courses, further broadening access to higher education.
PWAM has also initiated Google training programs for local youths, focusing on social media management skills.
Furthermore, the organization’s ongoing project, the Malindi Green and Blue Initiative, is geared towards involving children by establishing clubs within schools. The initiative aims to instill sustainability values in the younger generation and envisions the transformation of Malindi into a green and blue destination, fostering a more environmentally conscious community for the future.
